MRI infrastructure for intramural neuroscience.

About FMRIF

The Functional MRI Facility is a core resource for the NIH Intramural Research Program. Initiated in 1999 by NIMH and NINDS, FMRIF supports MRI studies that advance understanding of healthy and diseased brain anatomy, function, and physiology.

The facility provides a complete environment for stimulus presentation, subject-interface devices, behavioral and physiological monitoring, scanner operations, data transfer, storage infrastructure, and web-based services.

FMRIF currently supports five human MRI scanners: two GE 3 Tesla scanners, one Siemens 3 Tesla scanner, and two Siemens 7 Tesla scanners.

Since 1999, the FMRIF core facility has facilitated 1,480 peer-reviewed publications using data acquired in the facility. These publications include 851 papers from NIMH, 429 from NINDS, and 200 from other institutes, and have been cited 133,422 times.

Staff scientists collaborate closely with NIH investigators on custom capabilities including pulse sequences, basic processing pipelines, technical consultation, and study-specific advice. The FMRIF team remains committed to a world-class fMRI scanning environment for studying brain function, physiology, and morphology in healthy volunteers and clinical populations.
